Ask Capita: Fear that AI tools will make my job obsolete.
I am a recent college graduate in a data entry/analysis role. My company is heavily promoting the use of Generative AI tools (like Copilot) to automate report generation and data structuring. I'm afraid that in the next 1-2 years, my core responsibilities will be taken over by the AI, and I’ll be laid off or stuck with no path forward. How can I adjust my skills and positioning now to ensure I don't become obsolete? I feel like I am constantly playing catch-up. —Nervous Newcomer

Don't Outrun AI, Outsmart It: The "Tool" Mindset
3 High-Value Skills AI Cannot Replace (Interpreter, Storyteller, Quality Control)
Hi Nervous Newcomer,
I think this is a great question and a legitimate one, especially in the music industry and creative industries, where AI obviously has the ability to be the most impactful and the scariest.
I think that we have to look at AI as exactly what it is, and that is a tool.
AI is going to streamline workflows; it's going to make things a lot easier. And doing that is going to open our minds up and our schedules up and our time up to be that much more creative and innovative and impactful.
Is it going to take away your time from creating the spreadsheet? Yes.
Is it going to take away the time that you might actually spend gathering the data? As far as analyzing it, really analyzing it and understanding what the findings mean and how they impact your position and your team and your company, that still solely falls on you and your shoulders.
And I think with this tool, you're even more empowered to take that information and be really impactful with it, because now you have so much more RAM to work with.
The real goal with AI is not to try to outrun it. It's to really stand firmly in the work that you can do that the tool cannot.
And being very conscious of that, your abilities to be the interpreter of that information, to be the storyteller of that information, to be the quality control of that information.
You get to be the bridge from a much more in-depth data pull that now frees up the space for you to really do your job and get in there and get the information that's needed.
How AI Accelerates Your Career Growth
That's the part that really grows your career, and that's what you want. Data entry is important and critical, and typically an entry-level function, but you want to think about getting to the next level.
I think AI makes that opportunity a lot faster for you.
Best of luck,
Johny
